A 12-month fixed-term Research Assistant post in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering, based in central Cambridge, working on advanced manufacturing and materials — including laser powder bed fusion, mechanical testing and microstructure analysis of metal samples.
What you’ll do
- Prepare, set up, run and record laser powder bed fusion, mechanical testing and microstructure analysis
- Take custodianship of instrumentation — upgrades, calibration, maintenance and performance checks
- Analyse and interpret your own results and generate original ideas
- Contribute to research reports and publications, and develop best-practice lab protocols
- Help supervise student projects and build academic and industrial contacts
Eligibility
- Bachelor degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent
- Working knowledge of Matlab/Python (microcontrollers and machine learning/AI a plus)
- Familiarity with laser powder bed fusion
- Strong written and spoken communication; able to manage multiple parallel tasks
